History of The Hobble Diamond

Our Story
The Legacy of the Brand & Land
The Hobble Diamond brand has been in Montana for centuries. Its first appearance was in the 5th Edition Montana Brand book in 1894. The brand then jumped around the state until 1965, when it found its home in Big Timber. Since 1974 our brand has been engraved into the side of the sandstone bluffs overlooking the Yellowstone River Valley. Made out of slabs of concrete and painted white, the brand is placed above our ranch headquarters as a testament to a Montana tradition and the landmark of our home. Since 1965 the ranch has only grown in size and continued its legacy of preserving the land and brand.

The Hobble Diamond Ranch was first settled in the 1860's by William Shanks. Shanks was the second man to settle in Sweetgrass County, and went on to start the bank in Big Timber. Our ranch road and the main basin of the ranch are both named after Shanks in honor of his legacy as the first to settle the land. Since Shanks, there has been different families, homesteaders, and owners of the ranch. However, one core value has always remained — to preserve the wilderness, protect the wildlife, and honor the way of life on the ranch. Every day, we work with that purpose in mind, striving to maintain this legacy and ensure the ranch is left better than we found it.
